Row 1: Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front. Purl 1, and then knit 2 off the cable needle. Slip 1 stitch onto cable needle and hold in back. Knit 2 and purl 1 from cable needle. Repeat the front cross.
Row 2: P2,
Row 3: P1. Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back, K2,
Row 4: P2,
Row 5: Cross back as in row 1, then cross front and repeat cross back.
Row 6: K1, P4,
Row 7:
Row 8: K1, P4,
Repeat these rows for pattern.
To increase the width of the panel, add stitches in Reverse Stockinette Stitch to each side. For instance you can increase the panel's width to 13 stitches by adding two stitches to each side, purling on the odd numbered rows and knitting on the even rows.

Works on any number of stitches.
Row one: Purl
Row two: Knit
Repeat these two rows for pattern.
